Adopt a Tree

Tree

1 HOUR A WEEK FROM 1 PERSON, GROUP OR FAMILY = MANY NEW TREES FOR OGDEN DUNES

Beautification Committee (“BC”) is submitting a grant application to receive 25 trees through the CommunitTree program. OD received trees from CommunitTree in 2018 and 2019 that were planted at various locations around town.

BC is asking families, groups (neighborhoods, scouts, students needing service hours), or individuals, to adopt these new trees with a watering commitment of 2 years. The time commitment is estimated to be less than an hour a week. BC would like to have greater community invelvement in this process to reflect the town’s commitment to preserving our natural setting. Families can use the commitment as a teaching moment to instruct the next generations in stewardship of our natural resources.

There has been a lot of discussion in the town these last weeks of the tree focused environment we enjoy in OD and town residents commitment to this natural environment. OD has a long history of volunteer led efforts to make our town better and maintain the environment we all love here in OD. BC is asking residents (individually or in groups) to support planting and maintaining new trees in our town to continue the OD legacy of volunteerism and promoting a forest-like environment.

BC only has access to sprinklers on the front berm (low hill on right as you leave town before the tracks) where we hope to plant some of the new trees. The Streets and Fire Departments are busy with their own responsibilities and cannot take on the watering commitment. The trees will be planted in the fall of 2021 and watering will be necessary in the fall of 2021 and all of 2022. Watering is dependent on rain so a wet season*reduces time required for additional watering. Water is located at the fire dept and we will provide large buckets for each tree.

There are some tricks to watering we can share with volunteers.

If interested or any questions, please call Lois Braatz (219-743-5560) or Pat Maxwell (708-408-0395). Please let us know of your interest by August 15". We look forward to working with the town residents on this project.
