Bernadette Brier Slawinski, a 43-year resident who raised her children, Jennifer Patellis Qualen and John Patellis in Ogden Dunes, lives on Aspen Road with her husband Jim Slawinski. A graduate of IUN with undergraduate and graduate degrees in elementary, special education and administration, she worked at Porter County Special Education Services and Northwest Indiana Special Education Cooperative as a teacher, diagnostician, and special education director for more 35 years, and was an adjunct faculty member in the education department at IUN and IUSB for more than 30 years. Bernadette is the treasurer of the Indiana University Alumni Association Board and sits on the Chancellor’s Advisory Board.

She has been active in the Ogden Dunes community as past president of the Women’s Club, member of the Bridges and Railroad Committee, and has contributed to many other community projects most recently as Santa Claus’ assistant at the annual tree lighting ceremony. Her children, 19 grandchildren, travel, friends, and entertaining are passions that are filling her retirement years. As a member of the council, Bernadette will work to make a kinder, gentler Ogden Dunes developing fiscally responsible long-term plans for the community and its resources. She invites all to stop by and enjoy the park she and Jim have developed in the lot adjoining her home!
