Invasive Plant Removal, Long Lake Marsh

Saturday, July 29, 2023 AT 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Plants

Ever wonder what those fuchsia-colored flowers are that proliferate in Long Lake Marsh (on Diana Rd. by the Water Company) starting mid-summer? Unfortunately, the flowers are a terrible invasive species – purple loosestrife -- that crowd out good native species like blue vervain, cardinal flower, foxglove, asters and sedges.

Come learn how to identify purple loosestrife and participate in a hands-on exercise to keep it under control – clipping and bagging flowerheads and pulling young plants. You'll also learn about a special beetle that acts as a biological control agent in marsh and sedge meadow habitats.

Bring gloves and clipping shears. Wear long pants, hats and bug spray. We'll provide bags to haul the weeds away since they are considered a federal noxious species.
